Can You Smell Someone's Emotions?
The notion that someone can smell another person’s anger, sadness and other emotions is not as farfetched as we may at first imagine. For example, there is a documented case of a medical student who ingested mind-altering drugs and woke up with amazing powers of smell. For several weeks he could smell in three dimensions and successfully identified twenty individual patients, each with their unique ‘smell face.’ He reported that his sense of smell was more vivid and realistic than his sense of sight. Based on this case, the idea of linking scent and emotion may seem plausible, especially when we consider the myriad smells that our bodies produce, many of which could arise from our emotions. This idea is explored in my romantic suspense novel, SCENT OF DEATH, in which James Goodwin accepts an assignment to use his world-class sense of smell to invent a love potion.
